The Powder Coating Process
Powder coating is not only a creative application. It’s a very specific industrial process that produces a custom, durable finish. Here are the basic steps and the Top Rail team in action.
Prep
Any surface needs to be clean, smooth, and rust-free in order for the powder to adhere correctly. Top Rail offers sandblasting services to help prepare projects. Almost all metals can be powder coated as well as wood and glass materials.
Powder
The next step involves using an electrostatic spray gun to apply the dry colored powder to the object. The object is negatively grounded so that the positively charged powder from the spray gun adheres to the object in a smooth coat.
Cure
Finally, the powdered object is moved to an oven where it bakes so that the powder melts into hard finished surface. The object is then dried and cooled to complete the curing process.
